Reflections of the Flows
If there were no Tigris and Euphrates rivers, the Mesopotamian civilization would not have existed.
Without rivers, the mesos (in-between) potamos (rivers) — that is, the “civilization between rivers” — would never have emerged. Our civilizations are expressions of “dwelling” along rivers. We ourselves are reflections of their flowing currents.
When we encounter something near a river — including our own presence — it can be seen as one of the many shapes that mirror the river’s flow.
In my work Reflections of the Flows, I have explored two rivers: first, the Kamo River (part of the Yodo River system) that flows through Kyoto and Osaka in Japan; and later, the Hrazdan River (part of the Aras–Kura River system) that runs through Gegharkunik, Kotayk, and Yerevan in Armenia.
The Kamo River runs through Kyoto, one of the oldest cities in Japan and my home.
I found it a meaningful counterpart to the Hrazdan River, a new experience for me both geographically and culturally.
For this installation, I aligned the two rivers side by side. From each, I selected six locations, creating a total of twelve works installed at the entrance of Northern Avenue in Yerevan. The intervals between each image correspond to the actual geographic distances between those river points, at a scale of approximately 1:13,333 — where one meter in the installation equals about 13 kilometers in reality.
Viewers can walk through the space between the two rivers — to feel, both physically and symbolically, the mesos potamos, the “in-between of rivers.”
Through this work, I seek to return images to the realm of the “river” itself, by layering surrounding landscapes upon the river’s surface, forming an appearance reminiscent of an ouroboros — a symbol of perpetual circulation and renewal.
ながれのうつしよ
もしチグリス川とユーフラテス川が存在しなかったら、メソポタミア文明は生まれなかっただろう。
川（ポタモス）がなければ、その中間（メソス）——つまり“川と川のあいだの文明”——も存在しなかったはずだ。
私たちの文明とは、川のほとりに「住まう」ことの表現であり、私たち自身もまた、川の流れの反映として存在している。
川のそばで何かを見つめるとき——たとえそれが自分自身であっても——それは川の流れを映す無数のかたちのひとつだと言える。
本作《Reflections of the Flows》では、私は二つの川をたどった。ひとつは日本の京都と大阪を流れる鴨川（淀川水系）で、もうひとつはアルメニアのゲガルクニク、コタイク、エレバンを流れるフラズダン川（アラス＝クラ水系）である。
鴨川は、私が暮らす日本最古の都市のひとつ・京都を流れる川であり、私にとって新しい文化的・地理的経験であったフラズダン川と対をなす存在だと感じた。
このインスタレーションでは、二つの川を並置した。それぞれの川から6地点を選び、合計12枚の作品をエレバンのノーザン・アヴェニュー入り口に展示している。作品間の間隔は、実際の地理的距離に基づき、縮尺約1:13,333（1mが約13kmに相当）で配置されている。
鑑賞者は二つの川の「あいだ」を歩くことで、
文字どおり、そして象徴的に「メソス・ポタモス（川のあいだ）」を体感することができる。
私はこの作品を通じて、周囲の風景を川の表面に重ねることで、イメージを「川そのものの領域」へと還そうとしている。それは「ウロボロス」を思わせる——永遠の循環と再生の象徴的な姿である。
Reflexiones de los Flujos
Si no existieran los ríos Tigris y Éufrates, la civilización mesopotámica no habría existido.
Sin los ríos, la mesos (entre) potamos (ríos), es decir, la civilización “entre los ríos”, jamás habría surgido.
Nuestras civilizaciones son expresiones del “habitar” junto a los ríos. Nosotros mismos somos reflejos de sus corrientes en movimiento.
Cuando observamos algo cerca del río —incluyéndonos a nosotros mismos—
podemos decir que es una de las múltiples formas que reflejan el flujo del río.
En mi obra "Reflections of the Flows!, exploré dos ríos: primero, el río Kamo (parte del sistema del río Yodo) que atraviesa Kioto y Osaka en Japón; y el otro, el río Hrazdan (parte del sistema de los ríos Aras y Kura) que recorre las regiones de Gegharkunik, Kotayk y Ereván en Armenia.
El río Kamo atraviesa Kioto, una de las ciudades más antiguas de Japón y mi hogar.
Lo consideré un contrapunto significativo a mi nueva experiencia con el río Hrazdan, tanto geográfica como culturalmente.
Para esta instalación, alineé los dos ríos uno al lado del otro. De cada uno seleccioné seis puntos, creando un total de doce obras instaladas en la entrada de la Avenida del Norte en Ereván. Las distancias entre las imágenes corresponden a las distancias reales entre los puntos de los ríos,
a una escala aproximada de 1:13,333 —donde un metro en la instalación representa unos 13 kilómetros en la realidad.
El público puede caminar por el espacio entre los dos ríos, para sentir, tanto física como simbólicamente, el mesos potamos, “el entre de los ríos”. A través de esta obra, busco devolver las imágenes al dominio del propio “río”, superponiendo los paisajes circundantes sobre su superficie, formando una apariencia que recuerda al ouroboros: símbolo de la circulación eterna y de la renovación.
