Martial Arts

For Naoyuki Ogino, martial arts are a practice for exploring the relationship between the body, others, and the world.

Based on his practice of Aikido, he investigates touch, distance, response, adjustment, and the changes that arise within relationship. What he explores is not only the technique of attack and defense, but the subtle transformation of relationship that emerges in the hazama — the in-between — between self and other, consciousness and body, movement and stillness.

At the center of this inquiry is AIKI. Ogino approaches AIKI not simply as a technique for controlling an opponent, but as an event in which learned reactions soften and the body’s innate power of adjustment appears within relationship.

In addition to Aikido, he also practices Kyūjutsu and Tai Chi Push Hands.

His current activities include an annual Aikido seminar in Italy, leading an internal Aikido Club at the Stanford Japan Center, and body-based workshops at SIIEJ and other settings. Through these activities, he opens martial arts into the contexts of co-learning, intercultural learning, and well-being.

His multilingual publishing project, Well-Being through AIKI, also explores AIKI not only as an element of martial arts, but as a wider phenomenon of touch, relationship, and bodily adjustment.

In June 2026, the Italian edition Benessere attraverso l’AIKI was published as the first release in the multilingual publishing project for the book Well-Being through AIKI — An Invitation to Aikido, Touch, and Reprogramming.

Aikido Seminar : in Rovigo, Italy

In June 2025, Ogino participated in an Aikido seminar held over the course of approximately one week in Rovigo, Italy, centered around Aikido Aishinkan Italia.

Training together with several teachers and local dojo members, it became an opportunity to experience once again how Aikido can become a place of learning through the body, beyond national and cultural boundaries.

Aikido Dojo & Club : Aishinkan “Nao” / Stanford University Japan Center Aikido Club

Since 2024, Ogino has founded and directed an internal Aikido Club for students at the Stanford Japan Center.

At the same center, he has developed and taught the course Capturing Concepts since 2017. Separate from the course, this club was created as an extracurricular opportunity for students studying abroad in Kyoto

Located in Kyoto, Sonoyama Dai-Kyūjō is a Kyūjutsu dojo that has carried on the tradition of the Japanese dai-kyū, or longbow, for more than 160 years since its founding in 1862.

It is also a rare place of practice where the bow is drawn in a posture known as kiza, derived from the ancient art of mounted archery.

Ogino became the champion of the Reiwa 6 / 2024 Kyūjutsu Competition, held by Kyoto Kyuyukai, under a handicap system.

Through this experience, he realized that the sense of distance, breathing, bodily adjustment, and placement of awareness cultivated through Aikido can also connect to other martial arts.
